Despite global efforts towards its eradication, modern slavery is still a serious problem. Estimates released today by Alliance 8.7 reveal the extent to which people around the world were enslaved in 2016. On any given day, there were thought to be over 40 million living in slavery. The most common form was forced labor exploitation, at 16 million. For the first time, the estimates have been expanded to include forced marriage as a form of modern slavery. A total of 15.4 million, mainly women and girls, are thought to be living in such a situation.
