No deal was reached on ending the government shutdown that came in to effect on Saturday, president Donald Trump's anniversary in office. While the real effects of the shutdown were limited on the weekend, this could change on Monday when government employees will be furloughed.
In terms of the percentage of the workforce that is affected, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) would be hit hardest, as 7,500 of its 7,800 of its staff would not turn up for work. The shutdown also affects the much larger Department of Defense (DoD), where about half of the 740,000 civilian workers could be furloughed, according to data compiled by the New York Times.
