Virtual private networks create an encrypted connection between a user’s device and a remote server. Since the connection is encrypted, a user’s data is secure and appears to have the IP address of the server the VPN is connecting to. This not only keeps a user’s data private but also obscures where a user is located since the VPN connection takes on the IP address of the server. VPNs act as an effective way of securely searching and getting around content that is blocked due to where someone is trying to access it from.
Surprisingly most people in the United States do not take advantage of this workaround to access international TV content blocked for people in the U.S. About 93 percent of respondents surveyed did not use VPNs to watch a TV show available in another country, leaving only 7 percent of respondents fessing up to the practice.
