Travel has continued to pick up for Americans since the corona pandemic, with a growing share of U.S. adults taking more vacations per year. In 2024, 22 percent of respondents to a Statista Consumer Insights survey said they had been on more than six vacations. This is up from 11 percent in an earlier survey wave, conducted between July 2022 and 2023.
The United States was the third most popular travel destination worldwide in 2023, bringing in an estimated 66.5 million international tourist arrivals that year alone. However, it’s actually the domestic leisure travel sector that has historically accounted for the lion's share of travel spending in the country. According to a forecast by the U.S. Travel Association, in 2024, total direct travel spending of domestic leisure travelers in the U.S. amounted to $739 billion.
