In a recent Statista survey, around one in five people said that environmentally friendly packaging is important to them when choosing their food. This includes packaging that is recyclable and avoids the use of plastic. Out of 53 countries surveyed, respondents in Asia tended to be slightly more environmentally conscious compared to those of other regions.
Between 26-33 percent of respondents in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and India said that eco-friendly packaging is a concern when doing their groceries. In Indonesia, four in ten said the same - the highest of any country polled. South Korea and Japan were at the bottom end of the spectrum, with just 13 percent and 5 percent picking the option, respectively.
In China, just under one in four people said that eco-friendly packaging was important to them. Other aspects that ranked higher included whether or not the produce was fresh (60 percent), had a good taste (54 percent), was of high quality (48 percent) or included natural ingredients (42 percent). Environmental packaging stood in rank eight of the 17 possible options.
