How much sleep did you get last night? For many people, the amount of sleep they are able to grab each weeknight is far from sufficient, leaving them off their best the next day, unable to give their all for family, friends and of course, employer. While the consequences on a personal level of this tiredness and perhaps exhaustion are known to most of us, what are the economic effects of a sleep deprived workforce? RAND Europe sought to answer this question in a recent cross-country comparative analysis. For the UK, the estimated cost in GDP terms in 2016 was over 40 billion pounds. RAND forecast this cost, due to loss of productivity, to rise to 47 billion by 2030.
