More Than 117 Million Forcibly Displaced Persons

An estimated 117 million people were forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, political persecution and natural disasters in 2023, according to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). As the following chart shows, the largest share of displaced individuals continues to be internally displaced persons (IDPs), accounting for 58 percent of the global total in 2023. According to the UNHCR, the largest refugee populations in 2023 came from Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela and Ukraine. Seven in ten refugees are hosted by neighboring countries.
