A History of the Presidents of the European Commission

The EU summit continues today, with the most important question still to be answered: who will become President of the EU Commission? The conservative EPP had won the EU election, meaning top candidate Manfred Weber should actually get the post - but his chances of winning the majority of the votes are poor, while none of the alternative candidates have yet been able to come through as a favourite.

As our infographic shows, the EU has had 13 Commission Presidents to date. So far only men have filled this post, three of them from Luxembourg, two from France and two from Italy. The only Brit was Roy Jenkins, who took office in 1977. The European People's Party has had five presidents, the Social Democratic Party of Europe four.
