Berlin

Where Berlin's artists live

As rents continue to increase steadily in Berlin, the city's artists are battling expulsion. Up to 350 art studios in the German capital are closing every year due to higher costs and new developments. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, artists flocked to the city, taking over vacant buildings and old industrial sites. That has resulted in the disappearance of many artists' squats such as the famous Tacheles on Oranienburger Strasse which was cleared out in 2012.

So, where are artists living across Berlin these days? Last year the Insitute for Strategy Development released a report highlighting the difficult situation the city's artists are finding themselves in and it also shed light on where the live. Berlin has 2.16 artists per 1,000 of its inhabitants and most of them live in Kreuzberg and Neukölln. In 2011, Prenzlauer Berg had the highest share of the artist population but that had significantly declined by 2018.
