How Thuringia Voted Since 1990

Exit polls suggest that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has won 23 percent of the vote in the state elections in Thuringia, ahead of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats' (CDU) 22 percent. Compared to five years ago, the AfD has more than doubled its vote from 10.6 percent. Die Linke (The Left Party) was victorious in the election with 31 percent of the vote.

Founded in 2013 as an anti-EU party, the AfD has shifted its focus to immigration and Islam amid the migrant crisis. It sent shockwaves across Germany and beyond when it won 12.6 percent of the vote in the country's general election two years ago. The following infographic shows how Thuringia has voted since 1990 with the CDU's decline clearly visible.
