Netflix Beats TV Industry's Output Before 2006

Netflix released 371 new movies and TV shows in 2019, over 50 percent more than they did last year, according to data compiled by Variety Insight. It’s an impressive amount of content for the streaming giant to produce, especially when compared to what the entire U.S. TV industry put out a decade ago. In 2019, Netflix produced more shows and films than the whole TV industry did in 2005, Variety noted in a December 17 report.

But original content production isn't the only thing Netflix has going. They could also win big during awards season. The streaming giant leads the 2020 Golden Globes with 17 nominations. “The Crown” and “Unbelievable” were favorite TV shows among critics, along with Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” “The Two Popes” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” Netflix received 117 nods at the September Emmy Awards, taking home 27 trophies.
