This figure covers those who attended demonstrations to mark the liberation of Auschwitz as well as protests against right-wing extremism, the AfD and the CDU/CSU's migration plans, which include imposing permanent border controls at all German borders. The estimate is a conservative estimate based on police records, with the demo organizers placing national participation at more than 1.8 million. Yet even this is likely low, as the website lists multiple demonstrations without a headcount.
